Elbridge Gerry letter to Mercy Otis Warren, 1805 August 20.

In an unsigned letter Gerry answers Mercy Warren's request for information on Jefferson's authorship of the Declaration of Independence stating unequivocally "it was the draft of Mr. Jefferson" and that John Adams had so informed him at the time. He also denies that Gouverneur Morris ever said in the [Constitutional] Convention or elsewhere that "whoever had the power had the right, to sell the people at any time." The letter is written on the verso of the address leaf of Mercy Warren's 1805 July 29 letter to him.
